Unwavering commitment; how to commit
How committed are you to achieving your goals?
I teach, train and mentor people to become the 3Cs. Coachable, consistent and committed.
In this blog post, I am going to be focusing on commitment, and in particular what you can do to become more committed.
If you want to be successful in MyAdvertisingPays (MAP), in business, or in life in general, they you are going to need to have commitment to your goals.
How to stay committed to your goals
What’s your goal? You need to want it BADLY!
Firstly, think about what it is you want to become more committed to. Do you really, really want it? Because if you don’t, then trying to develop commitment to a goal you are not truly passionate about is not worth it.
In his book, Think and Grow Rich, Napoleon Hill said, “The starting point of all achievement is desire. Keep this constantly in mind. Weak desires bring weak results, just as a small amount of fire makes a small amount of heat.”
You’ll fall at the first hurdle unless you are absolutely sure it is what you want.
Ask yourself if you are committed or just ‘interested’.
In his blog post, Four Steps to Unshakable Commitment with Any Goal, ‘Jonathan’ (no surname supplied), identifies a difference between those who are interested in pursuing a goal and those who are committed to it.
“What’s the difference between interest and commitment?
- Interest reads a blog post; commitment applies that post day after day.
- Interest works an hour a day on your business; commitment works whenever time permits.
- Interest procrastinates; commitment focuses on what’s important.
- Interest makes excuses; commitment constantly acquires new skills and solutions.
If you’re struggling with this issue, ask yourself the same questions I asked myself:Why are you holding back? What is stopping you from living the life you’ve imagined for yourself?”
Have a plan. You may have heard of the Covey Matrix, developed by Stephen Covey, author of The 7 Habits of Highly Successful People. In this bestseller, Covey wrote:
“All things are created twice. There’s a mental or first creation, and a physical or second creation of all things. You have to make sure that the blueprint, the first creation, is really what you want, that you’ve thought everything through. Then you put it into bricks and mortar. Each day you go to the construction shed and pull out the blueprint to get marching orders for the day. You begin with the end in mind.” You must plan well and map out the route to follow in order to accomplish your goals. Needless to say, the beaten adage still remains true: “Failing to plan, is planning to fail.”
Success requires sacrifice. Are you prepared for that? What are you going to give up in order to stay committed to your goals? This could be TV, your social life, or time asleep! Look at the sacrifices top footballers make in their younger years. When their friends are out socialising, they are perfecting their craft.
Are you prepared to do what it takes to realise your dreams?
Once you’ve worked on your commitment, you are also going to need to approach the achievement of your goals with consistency. I’ve written about this topic recently and so if you want to read further, then click here for my recent post, ‘Consistent? How to develop consistency’.
