Despite guidelines that say we need to get a good night’s sleep regularly, every successful person will know that it isn’t always possible. There’s deadlines, conference calls with people in other time zones, late night coaching with people who need that bit of extra support, family to see and spend time with and of course the inevitable travel across the globe.
Everything takes time. In this blog I am going to be sharing some tips on how to get by on less sleep than is recommended!
Money never sleeps. This is a phrase I use regularly. Money likes to move, it like energy behind it. Money doesn’t work a 9-5. It doesn’t sleep.
Well the truth, is, more often than not, neither do entrepreneurs.
Anyone who works for themselves or is in the business of being an entrepreneur will know that every now and then a little extra help is needed to get through the day.
Here are my most tried and tested strategies:
Take a cold shower. A cold shower will kick start your system – particularly your natural fight / flight response, which will enable you to feel a bit more alert, pumped up and ready for the day ahead.
Do some deep breathing. Take five minutes before beginning your day and really focus on your breath. Create in slowly through your nose for a count of eight, hold for eight, breathe out for eight and then count to eight before creating in and repeating the process again. Repeat this five times. It will enable you to both increase and decrease your heart rate. Just make sure you stop if you start to feel unwell for whatever reason.
When you sit down…
Expose yourself to some light. If you can, work by a window with as much natural light as possible and even better, get yourself outside for a walk to keep yourself alert. The more light you can expose yourself to, the more awake you will feel.
As lunchtime approaches…
Eat little. Fight the urge to fill up on a large meal. You may be attracted to calorie rich foods and big portions, however this is more likely to send you to sleep. Instead… eat small portions of protein rich food such as chicken or eggs, which will give you energy but not leave you feeling bloated. And avoid sugar if you can, because the inevitable blood sugar crash will most definitely leave you wishing for your bed!
Throughout the day…
Rehydrate and limit your caffeine intake. Drink lots of pure, filtered water and if you must, drink caffeine in small mugs at 3 to 4 hourly intervals. A little coffee can help us focus whereas too much is going to cause anxiety.
