The Guide To Getting Started As An Affiliate Marketer – The Right Way

[This is the second post in a three-part series on affiliate marketing. You can find my first post – the beginners guide – here. You can also find my final post – the masterclass – here.]

At the end of my last post, I gave you three things to think about. They were:

  • What you would be happy to produce content on – your niche. What is it you’re passionate about?
  • Which form it will take – a website? A YouTube channel?
  • How much time can you commit to Affiliate Marketing?

If you’re struggling to answer those questions, today’s post will help. Let’s get you set up so you can really make passive income using Affiliate Marketing:

  1. At first, take it easy

I’d like to include a quick disclaimer first. There’s three parts to this series, and I hope that by the end of implementing all these tips, you’ll be on the right path. However, that doesn’t mean you should take on too much at once.

Give yourself weekly goals. Perhaps use the first week to decide on a solid niche. Another week to set up a website or whatever platform you’re using.

When we try to rush things they can become unmanageable, so take it easy and enjoy the process.

  1. Find your niche

Choosing a niche is one of the first things you need to do. As you probably gathered from my last post, it’s important that you’re actually personally interested in the products you’re promoting. If you’re not, people will know and you’ll get bored quickly.

Ensure that your niche is one you’re already passionate about, or something you’ll be happy to learn about.

What are your hobbies? Your interests? Do you like camping? Try starting a review blog for camping gear, easy! More of a home-deco fanatic? Try starting a home-deco themed Pinterest account!

As I mentioned in my last post, as long as you can place links somewhere to the services or products you recommend, it can take any online format.

There are three main types of niches you’ll come across in the Affiliate Marketing world:

  • Problem-solving niches – health, romance and wealth markets
  • High-payout niches – luxury goods, travel, jewellery etc.
  • Passion-based niches – hobbies and activities

The possibilities are endless, so get brainstorming! My next point comes hand-in-hand with this.

  1. Who is your audience?

Before you start creating content it’s also important to properly identify your audience. Ask yourself questions here. Why would someone come to your page? What will they buy? What are their pains or hobbies? How much will they spend? How can you persuade them to come back? Think about your niche.

Create a profile of your audience and this will make everything else so much easier.

You’ll know which brands to look for, and the things which might persuade visitors to click through. You’ll also be able to decide which types of links to use with this information – whether that’s affiliate text links, ads or banners etc. Please note again that if you are using Affiliate Networks, some only offer certain types of links.

  1. Choose a business model

Yes, there are business models in Affiliate Marketing. If you’re creating a website, you’ll need to choose one – either a resource site or a review site.

A resource site is one that provides ‘how-to’ articles, with affiliate links included where you’ll put “click here for more details”.

A review site on the other hand is one that would involve you trying different products or services, and then helping your visitors choose which one to purchase.

If you’re unsure about which one you’d prefer to go with, resource sites do require frequent updates, whereas review sites don’t. If you want to do really well in the business though – which I’m sure you do – you’ll want to add fresh content as often as possible, regardless of the business model. Dedicate yourself to consistency.

  1. Research, research, research

Once you’ve chosen your niche and got your platform ready to go, make sure that you do your research properly.

Familiarise yourself with the industry, any trends, which merchants you’ll want to be an affiliate for, the payment options available and product demand (good luck getting any sales for products that are low in demand!).

If you fail to plan, you’re planning to fail – so let’s get off on the right foot.

  1. Pick which products/services you’re going to promote

Okay, so you’ve chosen a niche and you’re ready to go. Now it’s time to choose some products or services to promote.

I won’t repeat myself here as I explained in the first post how to find merchants and products or affiliate networks.

Tip: Only choose a handful of products. People tend to choose far too many when they start out in Affiliate Marketing and wonder why they’re not receiving any commission. Give yourself the chance to promote each thing properly, and don’t hop on every affiliate program out there.

  1. Put useful content out there

As Warren Buffet once said, “If you work to offer a good product or service, people will want to acquire it without price being the main factor for deciding to get it or not.”.

This is true to Affiliate Marketing – you want to provide value for people.

One of the most important things you’ll need to know to succeed, is that you should create information people are looking for and sprinkle in affiliate links; do not just sprinkle in content and create affiliate links.

You already created a profile of your audience earlier, what were their pain points again? Or are they the pleasure-chasing types looking to buy expensive luxury goods? You’re always going to be solving a problem for someone or fulfilling their wants.

Whether you’re creating YouTube videos or writing content for a website, ask yourself if people will click on it first – and trust you when they see it.

They’ll trust you if you help them rather than over-selling. In other words, tell them WHY they should buy the product. Write to them like you would speak to a friend who is asking for an unbiased recommendation.

  1. Get traffic!

This is the most important part, the key factor in success. Realistically, most visitors won’t click on your links or ads. This means that the more traffic you get coming your way, the better.

So how can you maximise traffic? I’ll go into this in more detail in the final post in this series, but what I will say now is that you need to be willing to market yourself, not just your advertisers. Affiliate Marketing is a sales channel, after all.

Make sure that 90 percent of your content is useful for your visitors, and the remaining 10 percent about self-promotion. And don’t forget to use your own voice and personality in your content.
