How to get started with internet marketing

Internet marketing can be one of the most magnificent tools in your business-building arsenal. I say “can” because many people take the wrong approach, or don’t know where to start in the first place.

But you don’t need to get stuck in the sand like this; take a step back to think about how you’ll approach it and you’ll step off the right foot. There’s no need to rush.

Just the fact that you’re reading this tells me that you’re thinking before you take action, and that’s the right way to do it.

Here’s to getting started with internet marketing and using it in the right way to market your business:

How to get started with internet marketing

What is your “why”?

Your “why” in online marketing will most likely be the end result.

Every part of your business strategy needs to have a clear purpose, and internet marketing is no different. Just as you wouldn’t start a business without a business plan, you shouldn’t start online marketing without a plan.

So, what is it that you want to get out of this? A certain number of new leads? To raise your web traffic by 50 percent? A certain number of sales?

Whatever your “why” is, it needs to be clear, and everything you do needs to helps you get there. Always use this as your starting point.

Tip: Make it measurable – you’ll need to track your progress to see if you’re on the right track. Although there are plenty of ways to do this, Google Analytics is easy and effective. Go here to get this set up for your website and you’ll be able to track things like number of visitors and page views. Google Alerts is also a handy way to track when your business is mentioned somewhere.

It’s not enough to just set up some internet marketing tactics, you need a strategy; and a strategy requires monitoring your efforts. Monitoring allows you to find out what is and isn’t working, and to make adjustments where necessary. Keep your measurement stats in a spreadsheet to stay organised and efficient. I’ll give some tips on the best analytics tools soon.

Equip your website

Are you proud of your website? If not, it needs a revamp. This is the first thing you need to do – before anything else.

Now ask yourself another question: do you think it will inspire people to buy your service or products? Again, if the answer’s no, this is the FIRST thing you need to get up to scratch.

So what are the criteria for a great website?

  • Is it up-to-date?
  • Is it mobile-friendly?
  • Does the colour and design fit with your brand?
  • Are you grabbing visitor emails using a pop-up box or some other method? I can’t stress the importance of this one more.
  • Are there calls to action (CTA)? Newsletter sign-ups and e-books are great CTA tools.
  • Are there social media sharing buttons?
  • Is there a blog on there? Blogs form part of a brilliant content marketing strategy. More on this later.
  • Does it load quickly? Too many plug-ins or add-ons are a no-go. Only use what you need. If your site takes too long to load then no one is going to stick around to see it happen.

Tip: Services like WordPress allow you to create a professional-looking website in minutes – no coding skills needed. If you’re doing this yourself, it can save so much time.

Social Media

I doubt I have to tell you that social media is key. But that doesn’t mean you need to be on every single social media website out there. Here’s how to really utilise social media:

  • Who is your target audience? Your ideal reader? How do you want to come across? Ask yourself these kinds of questions so that you have a crystal clear idea of who your audience is – and keep it narrow. If you’re targeting everyone you won’t get anywhere.
  • Wherever your audience is, go there. That might just be Facebook and Twitter. Or it might be LinkedIn. Keep your audience in mind – if you have an older clientele for example, you’re unlikely to find any engagement with them on Facebook or Twitter.
  • Try starting small if you have yet to create social media profiles – one or two can be enough.
  • Make sure your social media profiles look as good as your website, and fit in with your branding.
  • Connect with your audience. It’s all well and good being on Facebook, but the only way to get any value out of it is to connect with people. Encourage them to ask questions, answer their questions, provide quality content that your audience will be likely to share. Help them in any way you can.

Tip: If you don’t know how to locate your audience on social media, Social Media Examiner has a great guide which you can find here.

Search Engine Optimisation (SEO)

SEO is the first thing that jumps into most people’s heads when you say internet marketing. Now, this has been the topic of debate in recent years, with many wondering if works as well as it used to.

A lot of the material you’ll come across on SEO will make it seem like a fifty-step system. However, if you do decide it’s worth a go, just know that it doesn’t have to be complicated.

No, really. In reality, the two things that make up a successful SEO strategy are: quality link building and fixing on-site problems. Matthew Woodward provides several case studies to prove that this works over on his website, and explains how to do it.

Tip: Screaming Frog and Deepcrawl are the best at doing the latter. Though Screaming Frog is free, Deepcrawl provides a more in-depth analysis.

Consider blogging

As I mentioned earlier, blogs form part of a brilliant content marketing strategy. The reason why it doesn’t work for many company websites however, is that they write a few posts and leave it at that. You get what you put in when it comes to blogging.

So how do you do it the right way? Blog consistently and create quality content. If it’s not going to help your audience, don’t bother with it.

What kinds of questions do they ask you? What kind of industry information or advice might they enjoy? What industry problems are you trying to solve? Keep it simple, helpful and consistent.

Don’t forget to use opt-in boxes to grab subscriber emails too, this way you don’t have to hope that people will stumble across fresh content when you post it.

“Success is the ability to do what you love every day. This may sound simple but what you love changes over time and having the ability to change what you are doing to match your passion is true success. This has nothing to do with money, wealth or status as each person has different passions and loves.” – David Hauser co-founder of
