A Masterclass In Affiliate Marketing – The Only Guide You Need

A Masterclass In Affiliate Marketing – The Only Guide You Need

[This is the second post in a three-part series on affiliate marketing. You can find my first post – the beginners guide – here, and my second post on getting started here]

In the first two posts in this three-part series, we established what Affiliate Marketing is in a beginners crash course, and how to get started the right-way. In the final post in this series, I’ll be giving a masterclass in the business.

If you have yet to get set-up as an Affiliate Marketer, save this post and come back to it later when you’ve got everything up and running. Or if you’d like, take a peak through it now to see how you can take everything to the next level.

We’re going to talk about what to avoid, and what to do to be the best. Are you ready to be the best?

  1. Don’t put the cart before the horse

Before we get started, I want to reemphasize a point from my last post. Far too many Affiliate Marketers, even those who have been doing this for a long time, slip up and do this. Don’t put the cart before the horse.

What do I mean by this? Don’t just sprinkle in some content FOR your affiliate links. The content needs to be the beast here. Then sprinkle in the affiliate links after. Value and quality over quantity is what you need to be giving your audience. Or else you won’t have an audience.

Value and quality will lead to trust, and trust is the way you’ll get the sales and commission you want. Don’t forget this. This brings me on to my next point.

  1. Always disclose affiliate links

Now, there’s a lot of conflicting information online about this one. I would recommend that you always disclose affiliate links though. Why? That word I’m trying to ram home – TRUST.

Have you ever been on a website where they are blatantly using affiliate links, but they’re tricking you into clicking – without disclosing their connection to the retailer? It’s pretty annoying. Don’t be one of those people.

Don’t worry about messing up any chance of success by doing this either; if you’re honest, and provide useful content, they will come back for more.

  1. Think before posting a negative review

My final point on the topic of honesty is to think before posting a negative review. Yes, you are more likely to find success in Affiliate Marketing if you provide unbiased reviews. However, it’s a good idea to contact the company before you post a negative review – in case they can fix it. If not, you’ve let them know anyway.

  1. Product demand

Researching product demand is important to ensure that every product you’re promoting has the potential to grab commission.

Once you’re getting more traffic, you’ll be able to conduct online surveys to do this. This is a great way to research product demand and to make sure you’re not chasing Usain Bolt.

What will you need to have to conduct an online survey? A decent subscriber list! If you haven’t yet, set up an email capture page, pop-ups, whatever it takes to grab those emails. This is assuming you’re using a website, but if you’re using something like YouTube instead, clearly you won’t need an email capture page to get subscribers.

  1. If you’re not having much luck, choose popular products

Although choosing popular products to promote takes more time in market research, there are benefits to a popular sales niche.

If you take this route, there will be more buyers. Not only that, but if something already has plenty of online sales, people are more comfortable buying that over something less popular.

So if you’re struggling with a less-popular niche, try switching over for a bigger pool of potential customers.

  1. Don’t use a single Affiliate Program – or too many!

If you’ve decided to utilise one Affiliate Network, your income stream won’t be very diverse. This is how businesses are ruined, and you need to treat your Affiliate Marketing as a business. So, utilise several different programs to create a range of income streams.

On the other hand, don’t take on too much. You’ll eventually work out the optimal amount that you can handle; the optimal amount being the highest number of products you can promote properly.

  1. Use headlines they can’t ignore

Write headlines that are either very exclusive or very inclusive. My headline is quite exclusive – it’s only aimed at those interested in Affiliate Marketing, and who are in the “masterclass” subgroup. A very inclusive headline could include the words “For men who…”. It’s as simple as that, but it can make all the difference.

To really grab people’s attention, look for the right people too. If your post or niche is about solving people’s problems or pain points, try and identify the MOST motivated people in that audience. Use emotive words to find these people that are most likely to buy a product – those who are the most effected by the problem.

Headlines aren’t the only thing you need to be focusing on though, make sure to write decent subheads too – people love skimming pages.

  1. Promote products everywhere

Don’t stick with a single platform – whether that be a blog or something else. Promote products everywhere! On your newsletter, on social media. Everywhere!

  1. Compare products

This is one of the most effective conversion tactics out there. When you’re looking for a new product online, have you ever been stuck making a decision between two or three products?

Use this tactic to your advantage. People will be in that situation and they will need help.

Create a comparison page for three products, then help them to make a choice. But the best bit? Include affiliate links for ALL THREE PRODUCTS. Genius!

Want some more genius? Track the page – I’ll tell you how to do that soon – to find out which is the most interesting to those visitors. Once you know the answer, move that product to the top of the page.

A Masterclass In Affiliate Marketing – The Only Guide You Need

  1. Always research how a company credits sales

You could be losing commission right now. Are email and phone orders being linked back to your affiliate ID? Always check how a company credits sales.

  1. Test follow-up sequences

Imagine you’re one of your visitors. Imagine you try to take a promotion or voucher offer, only to find that you get an onslaught of email spam. You’d never go back to that website again, right? Create an email account for this to test any vendor follow-up sequences.

  1. Build a community

Building a community is the way to finding real success as an Affiliate Marketer. Here’s how you do it:

  • Social media: If you haven’t already, start a fan page. You’ll find wealthy affiliates on social media, because it’s one of the most effective ways to build a community. It’s also another platform to promote products.
  • Encourage conversation. Ask people to comment, respond to comments, show your voice.
  • Comment on other blogs. Don’t just leave a link to your website. Leave useful or insightful comments and this will encourage their readers to follow you over to your blog. Generate traffic the easy way!
  • Use backlinks to other websites and let them know you’ve done so.
  • Help your visitors out however you can.
  • Encourage subscriber sign-ups by offering something for free – perhaps an eBook or a guide to something.
  1. Monitor and experiment

This is absolutely key for success! Minor tweaks in the position of an ad here or there can increase your commission exponentially. See what’s working, what isn’t, and what you need to change.

Ask yourself questions – why is or isn’t something performing well? Is that content a good fit for your audience? Is that in the wrong place?

To do this, you’ll need to measure performance consistently. Here’s how:

Hint: Pop any numbers into a spreadsheet and it will make the process pretty easy.

  • Set up Google Analytics to track your website. You can see your Unique Visitors, Visits, Page Views, and Bounce Rate. Easy!
  • See the changes in your number of subscribers by going to the ‘View details’ link in Google Reader.
  • Get your websites page rank here. You can also check the quality of backlinks here.
  • Social Media Stats: For Twitter, use twitter counter. For Facebook, find your page “insights” in the right sidebar when you’re viewing your page.
  • Make a note of any YouTube subscribers and video views if you’re on there.
  • If you’re guest blogging, make a note of both the posts on your website and any guest posts, and look for a correlation. You’ll get some welcome motivation if you see it go up!
  • There’s plenty of testing software out there. Alternatively, one of the best ways to track your campaigns try split-testing. Kissmetrics has a great guide to that which you can find here.
  1. Avoid having too many tracking codes

As I’ve just emphasised, having tracking codes is vital. However, if you have too many, you’re going to slow down the speed of your website. Get rid of those you don’t need.

For those you do need, put them at the bottom of the page so that visitors can view the page before the whole thing loads.

Keep an eye on share buttons and video embeds too – these can really slow down your site performance. This is because they use something called iFrame which basically involves loading a whole other page!

Hint: Another way to boost your speed it is by using caching or adding an index. You’ll easily be able to find add-ons for these purposes. You can also analyse your page load speed and get tips on improving performance on Google Webmaster tools – click here.

  1. What to do when your traffic plateaus

You’ll also need to know what to do when it all goes wrong. When your traffic plateaus and you can’t figure out why. As this has been covered in great detail over at Quicksprout, here’s a link to their guide on identifying possible causes and how to fix them.

A Masterclass In Affiliate Marketing – The Only Guide You Need

The Guide To Getting Started As An Affiliate Marketer – The Right Way

The Guide To Getting Started As An Affiliate Marketer - The Right Way

The Guide To Getting Started As An Affiliate Marketer – The Right Way

[This is the second post in a three-part series on affiliate marketing. You can find my first post – the beginners guide – here. You can also find my final post – the masterclass – here.]

At the end of my last post, I gave you three things to think about. They were:

  • What you would be happy to produce content on – your niche. What is it you’re passionate about?
  • Which form it will take – a website? A YouTube channel?
  • How much time can you commit to Affiliate Marketing?

If you’re struggling to answer those questions, today’s post will help. Let’s get you set up so you can really make passive income using Affiliate Marketing:

(Hint: Use this as a checklist to make sure you’ve covered all the bases)

  1. At first, take it easy

I’d like to include a quick disclaimer first. There’s three parts to this series, and I hope that by the end of implementing all these tips, you’ll be on the right path. However, that doesn’t mean you should take on too much at once.

Give yourself weekly goals. Perhaps use the first week to decide on a solid niche. Another week to set up a website or whatever platform you’re using.

When we try to rush things they can become unmanageable, so take it easy and enjoy the process.

  1. Find your niche

Choosing a niche is one of the first things you need to do. As you probably gathered from my last post, it’s important that you’re actually personally interested in the products you’re promoting. If you’re not, people will know and you’ll get bored quickly.

Ensure that your niche is one you’re already passionate about, or something you’ll be happy to learn about.

What are your hobbies? Your interests? Do you like camping? Try starting a review blog for camping gear, easy! More of a home-deco fanatic? Try starting a home-deco themed Pinterest account!

As I mentioned in my last post, as long as you can place links somewhere to the services or products you recommend, it can take any online format.

There are three main types of niches you’ll come across in the Affiliate Marketing world:

  • Problem-solving niches – health, romance and wealth markets
  • High-payout niches – luxury goods, travel, jewellery etc.
  • Passion-based niches – hobbies and activities

The possibilities are endless, so get brainstorming! My next point comes hand-in-hand with this.

  1. Who is your audience?

Before you start creating content it’s also important to properly identify your audience. Ask yourself questions here. Why would someone come to your page? What will they buy? What are their pains or hobbies? How much will they spend? How can you persuade them to come back? Think about your niche.

Create a profile of your audience and this will make everything else so much easier.

You’ll know which brands to look for, and the things which might persuade visitors to click through. You’ll also be able to decide which types of links to use with this information – whether that’s affiliate text links, ads or banners etc. Please note again that if you are using Affiliate Networks, some only offer certain types of links.

  1. Choose a business model

Yes, there are business models in Affiliate Marketing. If you’re creating a website, you’ll need to choose one – either a resource site or a review site.

A resource site is one that provides ‘how-to’ articles, with affiliate links included where you’ll put “click here for more details”.

A review site on the other hand is one that would involve you trying different products or services, and then helping your visitors choose which one to purchase.

If you’re unsure about which one you’d prefer to go with, resource sites do require frequent updates, whereas review sites don’t. If you want to do really well in the business though – which I’m sure you do – you’ll want to add fresh content as often as possible, regardless of the business model. Dedicate yourself to consistency.

When it comes to actually creating your affiliate website – click here and here for two useful guides.

Hint: To do this properly, also make sure you host the blog on your website (yourdomain.com/blog).

The Guide To Getting Started As An Affiliate Marketer – The Right Way

  1. Research, research, research

Once you’ve chosen your niche and got your platform ready to go, make sure that you do your research properly.

Familiarise yourself with the industry, any trends, which merchants you’ll want to be an affiliate for, the payment options available and product demand (good luck getting any sales for products that are low in demand!).

If you fail to plan, you’re planning to fail – so let’s get off on the right foot.

  1. Pick which products/services you’re going to promote

Okay, so you’ve chosen a niche and you’re ready to go. Now it’s time to choose some products or services to promote.

I won’t repeat myself here as I explained in the first post how to find merchants and products or affiliate networks.

Click here to get a reminder.

Tip: Only choose a handful of products. People tend to choose far too many when they start out in Affiliate Marketing and wonder why they’re not receiving any commission. Give yourself the chance to promote each thing properly, and don’t hop on every affiliate program out there.

  1. Put useful content out there

As Warren Buffet once said, “If you work to offer a good product or service, people will want to acquire it without price being the main factor for deciding to get it or not.”.

This is true to Affiliate Marketing – you want to provide value for people.

One of the most important things you’ll need to know to succeed, is that you should create information people are looking for and sprinkle in affiliate links; do not just sprinkle in content and create affiliate links.

You already created a profile of your audience earlier, what were their pain points again? Or are they the pleasure-chasing types looking to buy expensive luxury goods? You’re always going to be solving a problem for someone or fulfilling their wants.

Whether you’re creating YouTube videos or writing content for a website, ask yourself if people will click on it first – and trust you when they see it.

They’ll trust you if you help them rather than over-selling. In other words, tell them WHY they should buy the product. Write to them like you would speak to a friend who is asking for an unbiased recommendation.

  1. Get traffic!

This is the most important part, the key factor in success. Realistically, most visitors won’t click on your links or ads. This means that the more traffic you get coming your way, the better.

So how can you maximise traffic? I’ll go into this in more detail in the final post in this series, but what I will say now is that you need to be willing to market yourself, not just your advertisers. Affiliate Marketing is a sales channel, after all.

Make sure that 90 percent of your content is useful for your visitors, and the remaining 10 percent about self-promotion. And don’t forget to use your own voice and personality in your content.

In the next post I’ll talk about how social media and other tactics can help you to build an online community – and more affiliate commission!

The Guide To Getting Started As An Affiliate Marketer – The Right Way

So there we have it! Don’t forget to read my final post on this three-part series for a masterclass in Affiliate Marketing.

The Beginners Guide To Affiliate Marketing

Make Money MyAdvertisingPays The MAP Addiction

The Beginners Guide To Affiliate Marketing

The Beginners Guide To Affiliate Marketing

Wondering if there’s a way you can create a stream of income online, without actually doing much?

How would you fancy some more passive income – no skills required?

If the answer to those questions is yes, I have another tool for your money-generating arsenal. It’s called Affiliate Marketing.

Now, you may have heard about Affiliate Marketing before, but you might not know what it is.

What is Affiliate Marketing?

Affiliate Marketing involves promoting other people’s products and earning a piece of the profit when visitors buy the product.

You’ll find a product, promote it to other people – on a blog for example – and then earn commission for each sale. It really is that simple. Wealthy affiliates are living proof that you can go from broke to rich doing this.

The results won’t be immediate. However, with a little bit of consistency you can turn this into passive income.

Here’s how it works in a few simple steps:

  1. You are assigned a “tracking URL”:
The purpose of these is to identify which affiliate drives the traffic.
  2. You market the company:
Attract potential customers, try and convince them to click on the link and buy the product. You can use various methods to do this – blog posts on a review blog, a YouTube video of the product, social networking, email etc. As long as you can include a link to the product somewhere, you’re sorted.
  3. Customers are acquired:
A visitor signs up to the service or purchases the product.
  4. You receive a commission:
You get paid for driving the customer to the product or service. Easy!

The Beginners Guide To Affiliate Marketing

Do I need a website or a blog to become an Affiliate Marketer?

You don’t have to have a website or blog to try out Affiliate Marketing. You can create a YouTube channel and upload videos of yourself reviewing products perhaps – then include your affiliate links in the video description. Alternatively, you might like to create a Pinterest account. There are plenty of formats you can choose from – it all depends on your niche.

I should also mention that collecting email addresses or subscribers makes everything easier – you won’t have to hope that people stumble across your new content.

How can I create passive income from Affiliate Marketing?

Once they’re up, people can click on those affiliate links and when they purchase the service or product, you will receive a commission.

So if you’re at home in your pyjamas one evening doing nothing and someone buys something, you’re earning. You can be on holiday, on the beach and if someone buys something, you’re earning.

Like MAP (MyAdvertisingPays), this strategy can allow you to earn whilst you sleep.

Does becoming an Affiliate Marketer require any skills?

No it doesn’t.

The more you read up on techniques that drive commission, the better you can get. It’s like blog-writing – you’ll get better the more you do it.

As this is a three-part series, in my next two posts I’ll be sharing the techniques you can use to turn this into something really rewarding. Far too many people get a website up-and-running, upload some content, throw a few affiliate links in there and don’t realise that they’re ruining their chances straight away. My next few posts will allow you to get off on the right foot, so you know how wealthy affiliates do it – and don’t do it.

The Beginners Guide To Affiliate Marketing

How much effort does it take?

In the grand scheme of things, Affiliate Marketing requires a little bit of effort to just get your website (or whatever platform you’ll use) up and running. After that, all it really takes is uploading new material to your website when you feel like it.

If you’re passionate about whatever it is you’re producing content on, this won’t feel like any effort at all – you might even enjoy it. Plus, if you’re going to use something like a YouTube channel for product reviews, all it will take is a five-minute video every now and again. Not too hard, huh?

What are Affiliate Networks and how do I join?

Affiliate networks act as an intermediary between affiliate marketers and merchant affiliate programs. Many big brands use affiliate networks.

You don’t have to use these though – there are plenty of other ways you can become an affiliate. Here are the other ways to do it:

  • Go on websites of your favourite brands/companies and look for affiliate information. Or type “[brand/company] affiliate program” into search engines – if they have one it will probably come up.
  • Email a merchant’s website directly and ask if they have an affiliate program.
  • Visit other affiliate websites in your niche (once you’ve decided what that will be) to see which products they’re promoting. Then, look for links to the affiliate program on the merchant website.

If you do decide to go with an affiliate network, be wary that some are bad. Some don’t pay their affiliates on time, and some charge a sign-up fee. If you do want to sign up with an affiliate network, check:

  • Reviews – Are there any negative reviews?
  • Which kinds of links they offer (Text only? Banners?)
  • That the products are decent and up-to-date.
  • That they offer good tech support.
  • That there’s no charge – don’t ever choose one that charges a sign-up fee.

The first steps to getting started

If you’ve read this far, I’m sure you’re probably considering adding Affiliate Marketer to your resume. So where should you start?

It my next post I’ll be covering this in depth, but for those of you who can’t wait for that, start thinking about these three things:

  • What you’d be happy to produce content on – your niche. What are you passionate about?
  • Which form will it take – a website? A YouTube channel?
  • How much time can you commit to Affiliate Marketing?

In the second post of this three-part series we’ll get you up and running, and on the correct path to creating passive income as an affiliate. I hope you’ve found this introductory guide useful. Let’s make money easily and ethically!
